Week 4: Camera Use: Texture: Positive/Negative Space Manual Mode

Black and white enhances the detail of the rustic texture. Narrow DOF, high angle focus on the draws background blurred.

Wide DOF, high angle focus point back ground, all in focus.  The blue and white chairs complement at the messy building site. Positive space used with the reflection in the dirty and broken windows.

Week 3: Camera Use: Framing and Composition, Manual Mode

The composition and framing of Dame in violettem Kleid (Lady in Violet Dress) 1911. The detail of the painting is perfect the eyes look real looking into the distance.

Tripod is not allowed in the Auckland Gallery permission is required. Often camera shake with the high f-stops the detail is the art is amazing.

Framing the horses to create movement continuing forward, not to much in the foreground so your eyes immediately move to the stallions. 

Week 2: Self Task Vantage Point: Fore/mid/background

Vantage Point foreground, mid and background. This is created by the leading lines, the lights and subjects create a moody effect.

The focus point is in the background using a wide DOF,
High angle. The leading lines are equally distanced but the illusion created with the vantage point is narrow in the distance. Tight cropping, enhanced in camera raw top left was over exposed.

Wide DOF, high angle fore, mid and background are in focus. Great reflection of the trees and the sky in the water  adding to the warm contrast.

Leading lines, changing the angle create a different view to the photo. Focus pic 1# Low Angle foreground, and pic 2# High Angle background.

Week 6: Camera Use Self Direct Task Flash: Direct, reflected, diffused, light metering



Video for NZIIU at Mt Eden: My son Michael is employed at NZIIU. I used a Gold reflector below his face. This worked well till the sun changed position, then it created a blinding effect. It highlighted his face in the beginning of the video.

Only 1x flashes fired. Resulting in an under exposed image. (above)

Photo manipulated in Camera Raw: 1#
The changes where done in camera raw working with the photo in BW to create the best contrast.

The Grayscale changed to Colour very effective result from an under exposed photo.

Week 5: Camera Use Self Direct Task Light: Direct, reflected, diffused

Composition of the photo is complete with the rainbow in the background. The curving pavement leads the eye to the background. Positive space, using the reflection of the vehicles on the right keeping the photo balance.

The reflection is in all four corners cropping the photo. This was amazing when I noticed the crocodiles heads in the water. Image enhanced in Camera Raw and gradient used to lighten the background.

The biker completes the image not just scenery adds some character to the photo. Reflection and leading lines, created by the water on the decking. The photo was enhanced and the gradient tool used to brighten the right top side.

Auckland Bridge Video 28 March 2015

Direct sunlight creates a softening effect of the subjects hair, glowing. Warm colours created by the setting sun in the background.

Cropped photo no negative space filling the area with the subject better composition.



Direct light subject are all well exposed, good contrast of colours.

Reflected light image is more exposed on the right side less light foreground. Cooler colours with the setting sun.

Direct and diffused light, highlights the Oak tree casting shadows, softing the colours. It looks like a spot light has being placed to the right side and pointing down. Negative space in the foreground creates DOF wide angle.

Tight crop. Tree and children more noticeable.

Week 7: Camera Use Self Direct Gels

Orua Bay 25 April 2015

Amber Gel over the front of the lens, a warm contrasting
colour giving the photo a aged look.

Focus on the web blurring the background and using a tight cropping. Only cropped and straighten in camera raw.

Gel removed colour and black and white. Colours not as contrasting definitely warmer photo with the Amber Gel.

Red tissue paper place behind the subject with the direct sunlight. This creates a shadow silhouette texture. The wind help with the movement of the tissue paper.






Setup with the red tissue paper and clamps.

Enhanced in camera raw creating texture and deeper and contrasty colours grain increased.
