Week 3: Camera Use Framing and Composition & Self Directed Tasks

Framing and Composition, Manual Mode

F1.8 1/640 ISO100 Manual EF50mm ORIGINAL

Narrow DOF. The portrait has a close crop. The focal point of the image is the right eye. Slight smile. Looking at the camera she gives a hint of a smile but her eyes are happy. The background is out of focus so that it does not get your attention.

F1.8 1/2500 ISO100 Manual EF50mm

Cropped at the bottom, narrow DOF from a high angle, foreground focus. The subject is relax and day dreaming while leaning on the tree, head forward. I've taken the image from the side so I could create DOF field leading away to the left. Subject is on the rule of thirds. Having the second subject in the photo complete the image or it could be quiet natural looking, not much happening. Leading lines moving to the back left then a long the post and out.

Rule of Thirds:

F22 1/10 ISO100 Manual EF50mm ORIGINAL

The image was out of focus, I didn't check the shutter speed. Image enhanced in camera raw.
(The Temperature, contrast, highlights and clarity levels have being altered.)

F10 1/80 ISO100 Manual EF24-70mm 70mm ORIGINAL
Re-shoot the image, higher shutter speed. Wide DOF.

F2.8 1/2000 ISO100 Manual EF24-70mm 70mm ORIGINAL
Composition of landscapes leading lines move over the bridge down the path straight to the large tree. Wide DOF.
Cropping on the rule of thirds.

Flat light, Vantage point: front on view point, wide depth of field, straight lines

F6.3 1/500 ISO100 Manual EF50mm
Wide DOF. Straight lines. Not a very pretty piece of architecture, square and uninteresting building. Cropped rule of thirds.

F2.8 1/10 ISO1250 Manual EF24-70mm 35mm ORIGINAL
Wide DOF. Straight lines. Image is out of focus not enough light and no tripod.

F2.8 1/4 ISO1250 Manual EF24-70mm 24mm ORIGINAL
Wide DOF. Straight lines. Image is out of focus not enough light and no tripod.

F2.8 1/8 ISO1250 Manual EF24-70mm 50mm ORIGINAL
Wide DOF. Straight lines. Image is out of focus not enough light and no tripod. Doesn't look persecutive, looks like the building is falling over with the leading lines.

Filling the frame with the pattern

Negative space within the frame
F2.8 1/250 ISO100 Manual EF24-70mm 70mm ORIGINAL
The wider frame creates a lot of negative space.
This makes the image very busy and move the focus of the pattern.

Evaluative Metering Exposure
F2.8 1/8000 ISO100 Manual EF70-200mm 175mm ORIGINAL

Evaluative metering, centre focus point. Good for landscapes.
The image is a lot shaper when using evaluative. Less lens flare.

Spot Metering Exposure
F2.8 1/8000 ISO100 Manual EF70-200mm 175mm ORIGINAL

Spot metering, centre focus point. The edges of the trees are less crisp with spot focus. Spot focus locks into one area. The area stands out more than the background and the foreground.
Good for portraits and really getting the focus point on the eye.
